Wisdom From My Tribe Of Warrior Women

There is nothing like being a part of a tribe of women whether you are bonded by blood or by choice. It is one of the most revealing, awe-inspiring, self reflecting, and inspirational relationships that a woman can have. A couple of weekends ago, I was reminded of that. I had the pleasure of spending time with the warrior women on my father’s side. The experience was more than I planned for, which still to this day leaves me a bit speechless. I will say, that on this day I think we all recognized the warrior in each of us. Though we may express our fierceness differently, we are all most definitely fierce. As my Aunt Pat said “We are some warrior women, don’t get it twisted now.” With that spirit in mind, I wanted to share some of the wisdom from my tribe of warriors.

NyAisha & Haniyyah {Twin Daughters}: Don’t Change Who You Are To Make Others Happy.

I am super blessed to be raising such confident, secure, and beautiful human beings. Who you are is a beautiful blessing to the world. Your uniqueness is your gift. The creativity that your mind produces and your soul possesses, is the proverbial lighthouse at sea in the night. Embracing and accepting all of yourself is the ultimate form of self love. This does not mean that you will not grow or be influenced by someone or something else. It does however mean, that you will always stay true to the core of who and what you are. Your core is always your anchor! It is the space that you can always return to when you feel lost or off course. I teach my children to be firmly rooted in who they are and celebrate them as much as possible.

Pat {Mother}: Never Say Never.

Sometimes we underestimate the importance of flexibility. Often times I say, if you don’t bend at some point you will break. Change is one of the definite things that you can count on in life. If you open yourself up to infinity, you then can become infinity. In other words, life will always represent endless possibility and when you let go of the need to control and simply adapt, then you become aligned with endless possibilities that are on the same vibratory frequency as you.

Anna {Grandmother}: Live Everyday Like It’s Your Last Day.

I think, that we are all living the life that we’ve been given or we’re creating the life that we want. So often we get caught up in the mundane day to day events that we forget to see, embrace, and connect with the beauty that is all around us. Many of us never seem to be able to see beyond our problems and that beloveds, is sad. Life is so much more than our issues and troubles. It is a phenomenal blessing and miracle that we get the opportunity to be a part of. When I speak of miracles and blessings we cannot forget that the very essence of who were are is a beautiful miracle that should be celebrated daily.

Pat {Auntie}: Stay True To Yourself.

Beloveds, you will encounter so many people in your lifetime that will be happy with you only when you are doing what they want you to do. Your life is your own and no one can dictate to you the life that you’re supposed to live. The only way to truly be happy in life is to find what your heart calls for, your mind gravitates to, and your spirit aligns with. This will guide you to your purpose in life and whatever that purpose is should be honored. I will never say that staying true to yourself will always be easy. You will lose people on your path and be faced with choosing your purpose over your fears at times but, I promise that there is no greater feeling than living your life on your terms.

Jackie {Auntie}: We Need To Be A Soft Spot For Our Men.

Original men face a world of obstacles outside of the home and within our homes our men NEED to have our comfort. Nothing will ever be more of a comfort to a man than his woman and his children. We are here in part to be the person that he feels safe to be vulnerable with and reveal to us what he cannot to the world. We are in a position to show how vulnerability can become strength when embraced, accepted, and honored. Be the space where he lay his burdens, joys, emotions, thoughts, spirit, and show him your sacred alchemy.

Debbie {Auntie}: Put Your Best Foot Forward In Whatever You Do.

No matter what you do, once you understand that the world is your audience you will be further ahead than most. People are always watching no matter what it is that you are doing. I’ve learned that a person should give 110% in everything that they do because someone is always looking and coming to conclusions about who, what, where, and how you are as a person. Never block your blessings! Every person that you meet has the potential to change something about your life and you have that very same potential to change something about theirs. After all every interaction bares a lesson if you pay attention. Be fully present within each moment giving it all that you have to give so that you may get all that is for you to receive.

Shawnda {Cousin}: Don’t Be Afraid To Reinvent Yourself And Fall In Love With You.

India Arie eloquently stated “the only thing constant in the world is change, and that’s why today I take life as it comes.” Every day you wake up with the right to say no more, I want something different. Once that truth dwells within your spirit, the freedom to follow your heart and soul pulls you to your truth. Your truth and life purpose is for you and no one else! It doesn’t matter who understands and who does not because your journey is your own. So step BOLDLY into your skin, your thoughts, your feelings, your soul, your spirit, and your life! After all, you only have one.

Porsche {Cousin}: People Do To You What You Allow Them To.

What I love about this one is that you have to take ownership for not only what you allow but the consequences of it as well. Your life is ultimately your responsibility! Porsche went on to say “what you allow is what will be.” We all have the incredible power to say no or no more. We also reserve the right to walk away or remove ourselves from things, people, and places that no longer serve the greater good of our soul. Everything begins and ends with responsibility and accountability! I promise you are not helpless or hopeless unless you choose to be. The key here is choice so beloveds, choose yourself and your peace above all.

Deanna {Cousin}: Do What Makes You Happy And Live Life By Your Rules.

What I love about the women in my family is that, as they have grown older they understand the importance of their happiness as it relates to themselves and others. An utterly miserable person only has misery to offer to themselves, family, or friends. When you are in love with yourself, that love and joy overflows into every aspect of your life. We are better people to others when we can reside in a place of joy. This way of being gives momentum to a wave of positive energy that has a ripple effect. You will always be your greatest asset beloveds! Honor yourself!

Candis {Cousin}: Don’t Sell Yourself Short, You Can Do More Than You Think.

Confidence in your capabilities are a vital component to your success within any area in life. After all, if you don’t believe in yourself, why should anyone else. You are so much stronger, smarter, and more resourceful than you give yourself credit for. No matter what pitfalls or short comings your past entails, you are greater than the sum of them all. If you give yourself the chance you can do what you once thought was impossible. As Jay Z said “difficult takes a day, impossible takes a week.” You got this beautiful and the faster that you come to understand that, the higher you will soar.

To each of them women in my tribe, I thank you for your words, energy, spirit, tenacity, vibrancy, wisdom, and enduring strength to rise up! It took me a while to learn to appreciate the differences within us all but your love and humanity touches me. It is a privilege to be a part of such an amazing group of women. May we all continue to grow in love and make our ancestors proud of the legacy that we have ushered into this generation and the next. With love, Àse.
